Email to David Michael Green
Bravo, Mr. Green! I shall post your article to my blog (www.iNoodle.com/blog.html) the moment I send this email.
HOWEVER ...
"Again, it is the conservative movement of the last several decades which, unfortunately and more unfortunately still, provides the model here. They have been expert at keying into a handful of succinct, powerful and emotionally-evocative images which attract voters where they actually live – in their guts – not in their heads."
... This statement I find disturbing, as it suggests -- though perhaps I am misconstruing your true meaning or intent? -- that your idea of progressive democracy is not one in which the citizenry is respected as a partner in the governance of a nation (i.e., as in a true democracy, by definition and etymology), but that the regressive conservatives were right to speak rhetoric to be digested in the gut rather than intelligent and truthful words to be digested in the mind.
The loathsome Democrats -- which I cringe at being coupled with progressives as they seek very different ends despite occasional rhetoric to the contrary -- have become so loathed (as indicated by widespread a/political despair and perpetual low voter-turnout throughout the country) in great part because of their mimicking the Republican party's use of "succinct, powerful and emotionally-evocative images" as a means to "attract voters" rather than to govern the nation with integrity.
Such images are empty of substance, and the American public is as sick of such empty rhetoric from the Democrats as they are from the Republicans. Perpetually propagandizing the public, as both parties have done with such efficacy, and then having the gall to play to its ignorance is the epitome of a disgraceful politics.
Let us not further deteriorate the very last vestiges of hope which true progressives have for democracy by taking on the very worst of the regressive conservative tactics, the playing to "succinct, powerful and emotionally-evocative images". Let us, instead, respect the citizenry and speak truth to power and to the populace, which is us.
Please tell me that I've somehow misconstrued your meaning/intent ...
In peace,
Sean
