An Incredible Day in America, Indeed—But, Will We Seize the Day, Or Let It Pass?
Yet, again, the corporate media has failed to inform the citizenry of the implications of these illegal acts. Indeed, the corporate media has failed to present these acts for what they are, forget the reporting of implications. Obfuscation seems the preferred practice.
Mr. Garbus says that "most of the media missed it and got it wrong." Perhaps.
But, given the complicity of the corporate media in the war crimes committed to date by the US (and UK), and their willingness to disseminate government propaganda, to keep dissenting opinion on the fringes, and to steadfastly remain uncritical of the war crimes committed thus far, why should we assume that the corporate media's failing in this instance is an honest mistake?
The New York Times is apparently doing their best again today—by way of their top story, entitled Behind Power, One Principle as Bush Pushes Prerogatives—to provide (pseudo-) intellectual cover to turn what is an impeachable crime into a debatable topic, this time concerning presidential prerogative. This, two days after the New York Times admitted that they sat for a year on this story of unlawful surveillance, after the Bush administration requested that they not report on this illegal practice.
At what point will the New York Times' reading public dismiss the newspaper as a propagandist rag which is deep in the pockets of a war-criminal administration and an anti-democratic, and thereby anti-American, corporate-political elite, whether Republican or Democratic?
At what point does creeping presidential prerogative become incipient dictatorial fascism?
Will a majority of Americans know when such a point has been reached; and, if so, will they then have the will and the power to halt fascism's progress and regain freedoms lost? Or, will they continue to deny that fascism could possibly be visited upon their complacent, apolitical and corporatized version of democracy? Or, finally, will a majority of Americans wallow in their particular breed of fascism as they have long since wallowed in their particular breed of imperialism, undaunted by world opinion or international law?
Regardless, willful ignorance will not suffice should an excuse be sought in retrospect.

I fully concur with your comments, and as an ex-newspaper correspondent have long been disgusted with the trend towards corporate ownership, and the propaganda of the so-called "free press".
The only question I have, is why it seems to have taken so long for even thoughtful, well read and intelligent observers to have awoken to the reality of todays corporate world hegemony.
It was obvious before GWBs first theft of the US Presidential election, that he was nothing put a puppet and front man for the Carlisle Club, and that his puppet masters were Cheney and Rove. He has been a lightweight, frivolous, self-indulgent airhead since his college days. Only his daddy's political influence, and the generosity of daddy's Texas oil buddies kept him out of jail, and made him a figure head in several failed businesses.
His Governorship of Texas was the cabal's trial run to see if enough idiot's would accept him as a viable "political figure", and to ensure that he could be controlled as the cabalists desired.
It was an added bonus that while he was in Drug Rehabilitation in San Diego, (when he was supposedly in Alabama reporting to their Air National Guard), that he 'got religion' and apparently adopted some of the peurile 'religious' concepts that he now spouts.
There is a large element in American Society, that is so dumb and dense, that extreme right-wing so-called 'Fundamentalism' is the only kind of support that their tiny minds can find comfort in. Where else in the world, is a significant part of the population given to believing carnival hucksters peddling 'religion' in a tent, or on local television stations?
To anybody who bothered to read the history of the Bush family, starting with Presscott Bush, the big question was, how could the son and grandson of a man who made his fortune on the backs of Nazi slave laborers in WWII, ever get to be US Presidents?
The only viable answer, is the corporate ownership, and thereby the censorship, of the corporate media. As long as the gullible American public continue to rely on Fox as their only source of 'news', they are just part of the Washington 'spin machine' era.

There are no secrets ultimately. There are two main reasons why it has, and still is, taking people so long to wake up.
Fear and greed.
Fear, because many do not wish to see how different their country - and therefore their life - is from how it is idealised. To gaze into the harsh light of reality is akin to facing death.
Greed, because our lives depend upon the sort of deception and power now projected more nakedly, albeit essentially in the same way as has been the case for decades. We need strong, determined, aggressive and self-interested policies in order to maintain the system on which we depend for our lives and livelihoods.
Which brings us back to fear, and so it goes.
Sean, terrific post--and some terrific comments to boot. I've taken it upon myself to link your post to my blog. Thanks so much for your daily "noodles"--they are much admired by yours truly...

PS. Happy Holidays!
Our destruction with nuclear weapons approachs closer every day that this terrorist cabal operates.
The plan from early on in the nuclear age was, and continues to be, the total destruction of the human race. This is the basic "Secret" of why the Extraterrestrial intervention remains just that, secret.
